Why We Built OnThisDay.PH

The Problem

Historical revisionism in the Philippines isn’t new, but social media has made it exponentially worse. False narratives about Martial Law, political dynasties, and government corruption spread faster than fact-checks can keep up. Younger generations — who weren’t alive during these events — are especially vulnerable to misinformation.

The facts exist. They’re documented in news archives, government records, and academic publications. But they’re scattered across dozens of websites and locked behind paywalls or complex search interfaces. Most people will never find them.

Why Memes?

We chose memes as a format because that’s how information actually spreads in the Philippines. Filipinos are among the world’s heaviest social media users. A well-crafted meme reaches more people in a day than a textbook reaches in a year.

But memes have a reputation for being unreliable. That’s exactly what we want to change. Every meme on OnThisDay.PH is backed by verified sources. If you see a historical claim on our platform, you can click through to the original source and verify it yourself.

What Makes Us Different

• Source-first approach: You can’t submit an event without linking at least one verified source.
• Community verification: The community votes on accuracy and source quality.
• Non-partisan: We document history regardless of political affiliation. Accountability applies to everyone.
• Open source: Our code is public. Anyone can audit how we work.

What’s Next

We’re just getting started. Our roadmap includes features like topic-based timelines, politician profiles, and integration with fact-checking organizations. But the foundation is simple: make Philippine history accessible, shareable, and impossible to revise.
